The Amateur Tennis League of Latvia began its work at the start of 2013, promoting the popularity and development of tennis in Latvia, offering a new concept for tournaments - one tournament game each week, held at a time and place convenient to players. The format of the tournament also attracted players, with provisions to compete for every step in the contest with players matched to similar skill levels. A further incentive came with the division into ranked leagues “A, B, C...”, where the lower-ranked league’s winner automatically qualified to the next higher-ranked league.
