Description

Make wish lists, upload photos and log sightings about the 100 most common animals that are found in our beautiful Southern African resorts. Download checklists and learn all about each animal; where they live, what they eat and even their conservation status. Communicate with fellow campers via the CaravanParks.com Forums and topics discussing various animal sightings that have been uploaded.

Wish lists, Check lists and Keys

Before leaving on your trip, you can make a wish list of your favourite animals that you hope to see and then check them off as you go. You can also download and print the full A-Z check list of the animals for times when there’s no internet signal, and you can use the check list to identify the animals and keep a record of what you’ve seen. There’s a detailed key to the symbols used in the field guide, including their eating habits, activity periods, measurements, animal groups and classes and their conservation status.

Animal Groups

We’ve categorised the animals into 7 groups to make identifying them a little easier.

Antelope – from the tiny duiker to the impressive eland.
Bugs & Creatures – commonly seen creepy crawlies; beetles, chameleons, tortoises and lizards.
Large Animals – 10 of the big guys; from elephant and buffalo, to rhino, giraffe and zebra.
Large Predators – elusive and fierce; from lions and leopards, to jackals, hyena and wild dogs.
Primates – the naughty bunch; monkeys, bush babies and baboons.
Small Animals – weird and wonderful; from the aardvark to rabbits, squirrels, dassies and porcupines.
Small Predators – the little critters; mongoose, small cats, civets, otters, badgers and monitors.

Posting Your Sightings

Go to the animal you’ve sighted and click the binoculars sighting icon. Enter the date and the place from the drop-down list or type it in if it’s not on the list. You can upload up to 20 photos per sighting and add a little story if you’d like to. Click Post Sighting and you’re done. Your sighting will now automatically be added to the CaravanParks.com Forums, under Animals of Southern Africa, where other enthusiasts can view all your sightings.

My Sightings

Once you’ve logged your sighting and uploaded the photos, you can track your Sightings in two ways. You can find them in two ways.

My Sightings by Animal – Lists all the animals you’ve seen, by the most recent date.
My Sightings by Resort – Lists the animals you’ve seen by the Resort you saw them at, by the most recent date.

All Sightings

If you’d like to see what animals’ other people have spotted, you can go to three different lists.

All Sightings by Animal – Lists all the animals sighted by other people, by the most recent date. Results will show where those animals were seen and the date.
All Sightings by Resort – Lists the Resorts where animals have been sighted, by the most recent date. Results will show all the animals seen at that Resort and the date.
All Sightings in Other Places - Lists the Other Places (not on our resort list) where animals have been sighted, by the most recent date. Results will show all the animals seen at the location and the date.
